I know 2013 was just like....last year but I just HAD to talk about this movie and this seemed like the perfect outlet for it. Last year, I went through a pretty rough patch as things were hard at uni. I usually don't like romantic comedies as much because the parallels between love in the movies and love in real life are completely non-existent. If it was at all existent it's because the guy wants to get laid. So anyway, I didn't feel like going home after class on a Monday and so I made a faithful visit to my second home....the theater (say it in that cool dramatic way). I stumbled upon this movie, a romantic comedy that was about time travel, something that should have absolutely nothing to do with real life and yet I fell in love with it because although it was far fetched from reality, it was also the closest to it. This is my "sunshine" movie....this is About Time
Oh God I just love this movie so freaking much. The trailer is deceiving as hell though but in the best way possible. If you've seen it, you know what I mean. If you haven't, well go watch it and then you'll know what I mean in addition for loving me for recommending this to you. I usually do a list of things to explain why the movie is great or it isn't, or I give you some kind of guide. Here I want to just explain how I felt when I watched it because in all honesty this is a movie with a visceral experience. You have to wait till the end for the payoff, and the wait for the end is highly entertaining, sweet, funny, lovely, butterflies and kitties good all the while.
This fellow right here is Domhnall Gleeson and he plays the lead role in About Time (wow that sounded like a first grade essay). Part of the reason why this movie about time travel seemed so real to me is because they got a real guy to play the lead. I'm not implying that leading Hollywood men don't have male genitalia; I just mean that they got an everyday guy without the glitz, glamour, body type, and, "it" face to play the role. He gets the girl simply because he's a good guy. As the movie goes along, you realize how freaking attractive he is. It's one of those, their personality becomes their face phenomenon. I'd like to think that's what real life is like. People fall in love with someone for something deeper than an outlook. Maybe not in college cuz that's the age of hookups, shakeups, breakups, makeups, shagups, and making less attractive people feel horrible about themselves. Hey there's no denying there are good men out there in college but they're like finding a needle in a haystack. So it was nice to see the every man get his girl and for the right reasons. Dating someone because "the sex is good" or "he's hot" or "she's hot" is just a recipe for disaster. Chalk one up for personality bitches! Oh and the best part, he falls in love with Rachel McAdams because of her personality too.
You know when you were a kid, and you'd watch all those TV shows that had a theme or moral to that story? A time when you could learn good values from doing something deemed dumb and noneducational? Think about it, when was the last time we learned something about life from watching a movie? Yeah you could pull it out of your ass right now after thinking hard. I'm talking about walking out of that theater with that life lesson burning inside your brain. That's what this movie does. It's so relatable in many ways, even if it seems far fetched. If you stay along for the ride without thinking about plot holes, or how time travel doesn't exists, you could walk out of the room as a more positive individual. Gosh did that sound cheesy, I love cheese, but I hate cheesy, but it's the truth. Cheese it is. I love Gouda and mozzarella!
After watching this movie, you will want to listen to the soundtrack, and when you listen to the soundtrack, you'll be able to pinpoint the exact moment that song played. Why? Because the music accompanies the movie flawlessly and because the movie has so many memorable moments that's accompanied by perfect music. The best form of marriage possible. I have the soundtrack on my phone and I listen to it whenever I want to remind myself of that movie and that feeling I had when I left the theater. A tip for unknown bands out there, try to get your music into movie 'moments', it's a great way to garner a following; also make sure it's a good movie. Association is a powerful thing. I'm going to leave the album sampler for the soundtrack down below if you'd like to take a listen, but I suggest watching the movie first.
My personal favorites are "The Luckiest" and "How Long Will I Love You". "Push the Button" and "Friday I'm in Love" took me back to my younger, simpler times though. Be sure to comment on your favorites from this movie. Ooooh t.A.T.u. is on this too. Remember them???
This movie also gives you something to strive for. Whether it's a pretty house, your soul-mate, a better relationship with siblings, or spending more time with your family, you'll realize that time is pretty precious and we shouldn't waste it. Tim(Domhnall Gleeson's character in the movie) and his family are such a delight to watch. It reminded me of my family back home. It's sweet and warm, not a bad experience at all. The interaction between the two love birds seem to natural and organic, you can definitely see it happening in real life. It's also a relationship you'd hope to have with your in-laws some day. Good luck to the Asians out there though, those in-laws can be tough! Maybe get them to watch this movie and it will fix your relationship........or make it worse. Actually the best solution for Asian in-laws is this:
I can't say too much without giving it away.......so I hope you do check it out. I hope you love it and learn from it. I hope it's your sunshine movie too. So here's my rating and it should be fairly obvious:
FuckThe Notebook this is the best romantic comedy to watch!!! (aka 5/5 stars)
